Be a human being not a job title

Can you capture who you are in a job title?

In the world of work we often first encounter people via their job titles. The job title tells others inside and outside the company, what they do and how senior they are. Job titles are necessary but they don’t do a very good job (!) of communicating who we REALLY are and our multidimensional talents and interests. They don’t in any way give you a flavour of the kind of person they belong to, of all the different routes the individual took to where they are now; of their triumphs and failures. All the stuff that makes a person human.

And that’s where stories come in.

Stories are a humanising force. When we share the real stories of who we are and where we come from, and shine a light on those daily moments and experiences that make us tick THEN we can communicate our true essence. Then others - our colleagues, our customers, the outside world - can get a glimpse of our real selves.

And it all starts with intention. Unbottle your stories and share them at work. Connect with others beyond what it says on your email footer. We are made of much more than this.

For the past decade I’ve been training leadership teams, companies and leaders in the power of storytelling at work.
