5 Simple ideas for uncertain times
I know that 'having a good day' can be harder when we are living in uncertain times. Gatherings are getting cancelled, we are concerned about our health and our loved ones, and we're not sure what January is going to bring. So here are my five ideas to help:
Take time for reflection. We’re approaching the end of the year, a traditional time for taking stock as well as thinking ahead to the coming months. And the pandemic has thrown into focus what really matters even more so, giving us a sense of clarity about how we want to live our lives. Take a few moments to tune into what you want to do more of, and what you’re ready to let go of. What’s really important to you? Note it down to guide you.
Turn routines into rituals. Psychotherapist Esther Perel describes rituals as elevated routines. Laying the table for dinner is a routine; but adding candles and flowers is a ritual. How can you elevate your daily routines into rituals, creating special moments out of the mundane?
Walk to shift your mindset. A five minute walk can be all it takes to give you a much needed shift in your energies and emotions. See if a walk around the block to breathe in some fresh air reinvigorates or helps give you a new perspective.
Zoom in on the small things. Yoga? Writing your diary? Walking the dog? What are the small ingredients that are sacred to having a good day? Make sure they are present in your everyday life.
Just have a day. At times like these, life can often feel challenging, overwhelming and unnavigable. It’s normal. When you have a difficult day, acknowledge how you’re feeling rather than pushing against it. We often put pressure on ourselves when we don’t achieve what we want. Take the pressure off. So if you can’t have a good day, perhaps just have a day.
