When slow beats fast…
At the start of my self-employed life I used to rush rush rush. Pack the week with projects and meetings. Squeeze results out of every opportunity. That’s what I thought entrepreneurial life looked like.
But I soon realised that wasn't what I needed. I decided to do things my way. I slowed down. I learned that it’s okay to take your time. That it's okay to make regular space for thinking and reflection. That’s what I’ve been focused on for the last decade.
It’s what Cal Newport would call ‘slow productivity:’
- doing fewer things
- working at a natural pace
- obsessing over quality
For me that means focusing on fewer, but more meaningful, projects where I can put in the right amount of time to make an impact. Keeping plenty of blank space in my calendar. Always focusing on quality not quantity of hours. And also being aware of what’s on my ‘not to do’ list, so I know what really matters. That’s my recipe.
