Entrepreneurship comes in all shapes and sizes.
I had a really interesting chat with my friend Abby - founder of Dirty Work Digital - this morning over our 11 o’clock coffee.
We were talking about ‘entrepreneurship.’
You might think being an entrepreneur is only for startup founders and business owners. But I think it can be broader than that. My definition of entrepreneurship is ‘taking a risk to make your idea happen.’ That's what I'm doing. That's what Abby's doing.
I see entrepreneurship as a spirit. It lives within us, an energy that fuels us. It’s one we can draw on to ignite the spark of our ideas; we use it to fan the flames and keep them alive. It helps us to take risks - to say yes to things, or just as importantly to turn things down when they don’t serve us. It helps us put our initiatives into practice, and grasp the opportunities open to us.
You might be employed by an organisation and have a weekend side project doing pop-up street food. Or you’re a co-founder, building a startup that’s going to make the world a better place. Or perhaps you’re like me and Abby, a solo entrepreneur or small business owner who’s always looking to evolve and enhance, making big leaps into the unknown and seeing where the water flows.
Whatever the manifestation - it’s all about that spirit. Spotting opportunities, taking risks, coming up with different ways of doing things. Putting ideas into action, without a rulebook and no-one telling you how to do it. Being a revolutionary!
And that’s why I identify as an entrepreneur.
Today is the start of another week in my 280th month (and counting) of working as an independent.
280 months of risk-taking.
280 months of making ideas happen.
280 months of building a work life around Me.
Entrepreneurship comes in all shapes and sizes.
